＜さてこれを見つけた経緯＞
先日、何かの本で誤植により、姦淫を勧める文言が書かれた聖書のことを読んだ。そう言えば、どっかで聞いたことあるなあ～と思い、その事を友人に話すと、それ有名な話じゃないといつものように言われた。
そこで、肝心の書名を聞くとその人も知らないという・・・使えないだろ、ソレ！ いばってたくせに・・・（ブツブツ）。
いろいろとネットで調べてみると、どうやら日本語では『姦淫聖書』（英文直訳だと「邪悪な聖書」だけど）というらしい。

姦淫聖書でもって、好奇心旺盛な私は、更にネット上で調べていたら・・・凄いものを発見しちゃいました。
1631年に英国で印刷業者ロバート・バーカー（Robert Barker）によって印刷された欽定訳聖書は、のちに The Wicked Bible 、すなわち「姦淫聖書（邪悪聖書）」と呼ばれた。それは出エジプト記におけるモーセの「十戒」の第七条、"Thou shalt not commit adultery" （汝姦淫するなかれ）から否定のnotが抜け落ちたために、「汝姦淫すべし」となり、神が人々に姦淫を勧める聖書となってしまったからである。このためバーカーは高額の罰金を科されるも、支払えずに投獄されて獄死し、聖書は回収された。しかし密かに隠して取っておいた者が何人もいて、現在も世界に11部残されているそうである。聖書の誤植には必ず引き合いに出されるほど有名。
売ってんですよ～『姦淫聖書』って！
どうやら稀覯本の専門書店らしいのですが、$89,500 だってさ。日本円にして984万5千円（$1＝110円換算）。家を買うより安いじゃん、誰か買ったりしません？ 今なら20％OFFらしいから、800万円でお釣りがきますよ。
クリスマス・プレゼントにこんなのもらったら、きっと相手の事を見直すと思うなあ～。惚れ直すんじゃない？（笑）。

1631 "Wicked Bible"写真の"Wicked Bible"の白っぽい所が問題の赤字部分です。
This King James Version Bible is an unspeakably rare collector’s item. The printers were fined 300 pounds sterling for their terrible typographical error in printing the Ten Commandments, omitting the all-important word “not” and rendering the verse as, “Thou shalt commit adultery”! The lot of 1,000 copies were ordered destroyed, but only a handful escaped destruction, making them the rarest of rare. This is the only one for sale in the world.

キング・ジェームズ版聖書（欽定聖書）は、言いようも無いほど珍しいコレクターアイテムです。印刷業者達は、モーゼの十戒で最も重要な単語「not」を除いてしまい、「汝、姦淫せよ！」といった逆のことをさせる、酷い印刷ミスをしたので英貨300ポンドの罰金を科された。千部全てが破棄されるよう命じられたが、ほんの少数が破壊を逃れて残り、それらは希少なものの最たるものになった。ここにあるのは、世界の中で販売されている唯一のものです。

そうそう、ついでにおまけ。
キング・ジェームズの命により、英訳された聖書は、幾つかの版が出されているそうですが、毎回のように誤植があったようですね。今回の1631年のものは、その中でも特に酷かったということみたいです。

The zenith of ‘Englishing’ the Bible came with the King James Authorised Version. James I of England declared that he had yet to see ‘a Bible well translated into English’, so he directed that the ‘best-learned in both universities’ (Oxford and Cambridge) should begin work on a new translation of the Bible. Companies of translators were set up and, between 1604 and 1611, they completed their work.
The first issue of the King James version had many errors in its text, including ‘and he went into the city’ (Ruth iii. 15) instead of ‘and she went into the city’. The earlier edition was thus called the Great ‘He’ Bible, 1611. The second issue corrected the error and became known as the Great ‘She’ Bible, 1611.
The Library holds a 1613 edition of the King James Authorised Version in its Rare Book Collection. It is large and gilt-edged with a black leather cover, but its status as a ‘He’ version or a ‘She’ is confused. Handwritten notes bound into the back of the Library’s edition suggest that this Bible appears to have been mixed sheets of both previous editions and that it ‘is not an exact reprint of the Great He Bible of 1611, or of the Great She Bible of 1611-1613’. However the Library’s copy shows correctly ‘she went into the city’.
Another printing error gave rise to the Wicked Bible in which the commandment was rendered ‘Thou shalt commit adultery,’ a shock for pious readers. Printers Robert Barker and Martin Lucas were fined severely for their lapse. Gradually errors were corrected and, over the next decades, the King James Authorised Version overtook the Geneva Bible as the most popular Bible among English-speaking peoples. Many editions of the Authorised Version, like the Library’s 1741 edition printed for John Baskett, London, were smaller sized volumes designed for home reading.
